Mr Anton van Schalkwyk

Anton started working with claims enquiries in 2010 at Medihelp. By 2014 he had built himself into a space for clinical validation in general surgery coding in CPT. In 2018 he accepted the position of coding specialist at SAMA. After the retirement of the previous Head of Coding at SAMA at the end of 2021, he became the designated Head of Coding at SAMA. He made a significant contribution to the renegotiation of continued use of CPT in South Africa, after SAMA’s legacy contract with the American Medical Association expired at the end of 2019. In 2025 he joined the Insight Health Solutions team, which forms part of Insight Actuaries and Consultants.

Anton holds a Masters Degree (Cum Laude) in Theology from the University of Pretoria. He wrote the Certified Professional Coders examination of the American Academy for Professional Coders in 2020.

Within the clinical coding space, it is the innovative process in the development of codes, thought leadership in coding, and Coding training that he finds most intriguing.
