Professor Ilse Truter

Ilse Truter is a distinguished professor in the Department of Pharmacy, leader of the Drug Utilization Research Unit (DURU) and director of the School of Clinical Care and Medicinal Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha, South Africa. She holds two doctorates (in Pharmacy and Business Management), and is a registered pharmacist. She has successfully completed the international accredited Travel Medicine Course.  She is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for Drug Statistics Methodology.

Professor Truter has authored 140 peer-reviewed research articles, five chapters in books, and 163 articles in local/professional journals. She is a National Research Foundation (NRF) B rated researcher. Her research field is pharmacoepidemiology (including drug utilization research and pharmacoeconomics), and clinical pharmacy.

She is an elected member of the South African Pharmacy Council (2019-2023, 2024-2028), a fellow of Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa, and a council member of the South African Association of Health Educationalists. Professor Truter is a fellow of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (FISPE) and a member of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). She is a founding member of the Medicines Utilisation Research in Africa (MURIA) group, and one of the regional leads the ISPE-African Regional Interest Group (ISPE-AfRiG).

Professor Truter has supervised 24 masters’ degrees and 12 doctoral studies to completion, and is currently supervising a further 9 postgraduate students. She has conducted training on drug utilisation research methodology, including the ATC/DDD System, in various countries, serves as moderator and external examiner for several local and international universities, and serves as an associate editor of Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety and the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice.
